Now I come to reviewing this cutesy 1993 shooting game from Konami. Starring Twinbee from the game Parodius, he introduces a new character, Winbee. This game was only released in Europe and Japan.
The story starts with Twinbee and Winbee patrolling the skies when in comes a strange message...
"...My name is Madoka. Please rescue my grandfather. My grandfather is a scientific genius, however... He hit his head on a pole... He has become a bad person and wants to rule the world."
Our heroes agree to help. And off they go to various worlds to shoot their way through all sorts of bad guys and unfamiliar backgrounds...
Graphics [9.3/10]:
Very cute and luvverly graphics. The spites are just too damn cute to hate, and the wibbly background effects on the underwater level are just too good to judge.
Music and Sound [8.2/10]:
The music is fairly good, especially on the underwater level, but the sound effects are too repetetive.
Game Play [8.8/10]:
A lot of thought has gone into the playability of this game. You can shoot normal fire, you can set off a smart bomb (little ships flying about destroying what they crash into), and you can launch bombs to ground targets. All this from responsive controls that are easy to pick up.
Challenge/Replay [8.5/10]:
The game is fairly large, and the cutesy graphics just about manage to hide a complex game with a lot of appeal. You'll just love the game and you'll return to it quite a lot.
Conclusion/Overall [8.4/10]:
Pop'n Twinbee is one game of a showcase in Konami's portfolio of excellence. If you can find it, then I strongly suggest you buy it.
